Book Shopping

Q: Where do I find all the great books you recommend on this site?

A: We at CLAWS have done some major digging to unearth some of the rarer books we recommend. Many of them are, unfortunately, out of print--and we've found that it's not likely that you will be able to walk into a mainstream bookstore and find all of the books on this list. We suggest that you check your local library, and comb used bookstores for second-hand copies.

Here are suggestions for online shopping through independent bookstores. Not all of these stores carry all of the books we've listed, of course--searching the catalogs will be necessary.

DISCLAIMER: Some of these stores carry some very fringe-culture material, for example, on crime, violence, etc., and we don't necessarily endorse all of it. However, all of these stores carry books you won't find at the corporate chain bookstores, and we support their efforts to make non-mainstream information available to those who want it.

You might also want to check out BookSense or BookWeb, which are good references on independent booksellers. If you're wondering why CLAWS supports buying from independents rather than corporate chains like Borders, see No Borders (a site protesting a proposed Borders bookstore in Davis, CA) for more information.

Or, better yet, do some research about the unprecedented power wielded by corporations today and give your support to struggling independent businesses.

Happy reading!

QUOTES:

"True wealth has little to do with material possessions. Rather, it's a treasure chest of life experiences and insights. You can't increase it by hoarding, leveraging, or investing it. The best "returns" on true wealth invariably come when you do your level best to share your "treasures" with as many people as possible."
- John O. Andersen

"It would be a different world were it no longer necessary to waste precious and scarce hours and days of one's life fearing the consequences of suddenly being out of work, laid off, unable to make even basic ends meet."
- Lynn Chancer

"It is crucial that wages do not form the motive for achievement. Work must be done solely from a sense of pride and responsibility."
- Folkert Wilken

"We need to rethink just why jobs are so important and how best to arrange for people to...derive in some other way the satisfaction jobs now provide."
